Counseling Program Information

Henderson Elementary School's Counselors:

  • Help students resolve social/emotional problems.
  • Support the development of life-skills such as problem solving and conflict resolution.
  • Provide opportunities for students to work cooperatively together.
  • Coordinate with school staff and community resources to assist students.
  • Offer crisis prevention and intervention.

These services are provided through small groups, individual brief counseling, and classroom counseling lessons.




Comprehensive school counseling programs promote and enhance student, academic, career, and social/emotional outcomes. Effective school counseling is a collaborative process involving school counselors, students, families, teachers, administrators, other school staff and education stakeholders.




The students of Henderson Elementary will be able to demonstrate resiliency, growth mindset, citizenship, and responsibility.




The mission of Henderson Elementary’s school counseling department is to inspire all students to reach their maximum potential through academic, career, and social/emotional development, and in doing so, become successful life-long learners and productive citizens. All students will have equitable access to Henderson Elementary’s school counseling program which provides developmentally appropriate activities including individual and small group counseling and school counseling curriculum lessons. School counselors at Henderson Elementary promote a creative learning environment, rigorous curriculum, and positive forward thinking.


Counseling Lessons

Developmental classroom guidance lessons are an opportunity to provide information and support to the entire student body. The goal of classroom guidance is to provide developmentally appropriate lessons in grades K-5. Lessons are designed based on county curriculum standards focusing on students’ academic, personal/social and career development.

Small Group Counseling

Small Group Counseling is structured, age appropriate, social emotional learning with other peers that share similar experiences. This focused approach normalizes the learning process and provides students an environment with less pressure as they practice their skills.

Group sessions consist of structured learning activities that may include multimodal activities such as sensory play, role playing, reading books, games, and group discussions.

Students may be referred to a group by a teacher, parent, or administrator. A signed permission slip is always needed by a guardian in order for students to participate in a group.

Groups are held throughout the year based on the needs of students. Some group topics include:

  • Skill Building
  • School Success Skills
  • Anger management
  • Social Skills
  • Changing Families
  • Friendship
  • Self-Esteem
  • Grief

Individual Counseling

Counseling is provided on an individual basis for students. Individual counseling is available to students who are having difficulties with relationships, family/personal concerns, or if day to day tasks are proving to be difficult and overwhelming. These difficulties need to be interfering with schoolwork and prohibiting the student from active participation in the classroom setting.

Students are referred to the counselor by classroom teacher, administrator, or student him/herself.

Top Dogs

The Henderson Elementary School Top Dog program is a family and community engagement educational initiative. The Top Dog program invites fathers, grandfathers, uncles, or other father figures to volunteer at least one day, full or half day, at their child’s/student’s school during the school year. Fathers and father figures sign up to volunteer through the QR Code on the front of this flyer or by contacting Mrs. Erlichman at any time throughout the school year.

The goals of the Henderson Elementary School Top Dog program are:

  1. To provide positive male role models for the students, demonstrating by their presence that education is important.
  2. To provide extra sets of eyes and ears to enhance school security and reduce bullying.

Top Dogs perform a variety of tasks during their volunteer day including monitoring the school entrance, assisting with unloading and loading of buses and cars, monitoring the lunch room, or helping in the classroom with a teacher’s guidance by working with small groups of students on homework, flashcards, or spelling. Many school principals have reported that the mere presence of a Top Dog dramatically reduces reports of bullying.

Program benefits:

  • Students gain a positive male role model. Some students do not have a father-figure present in their home and the number of male teachers has been steadily declining in recent years. More positive male role models are needed in the school setting.
  • Schools gain an extra set of eyes and ears. The presence of Top Dog can increase the sense of security in the building for students and staff, and it helps create an environment conducive to learning.
  • Fathers and father-figures can spend meaningful time with their students in the school setting and gain a greater awareness of the positive impact they can have on their student’s life, just by being present.
  • When Top Dogs invest a day at school, they can learn how better to partner with the school to meet educational goals of students.
