August 16, 2016
WELCOME to the 2016 - 2017 academic year at Henderson Elementary School (HNES) – Home of the Huskies and Leaders of the P.A.C.K. We Persevere, Achieve, and Celebrate our Knowledge. Henderson is also recognized as a Focus School for Children’s Engineering integrating STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics). During the 2015-16 school year, Henderson was honored as the 2015 STEM School of the Year by the Engineering for Kids Foundation. As we continue to grow our Children’s Engineering Program, we look forward to working with you and your family to make the 2016-17 school year, your child’s best year yet!
Your child’s class assignment for the 2016-20167 school year is attached in the letter that is being mailed home. Please send this card in with your child on the first day of school.
If you have a Kindergarten student, Orientation will be Thursday, August 25th, from 9 a.m. – 11 a.m. in our school cafeteria. You may bring your school supplies with you to drop off in the classroom after the orientation in the cafeteria.
If your child is a new student in grades 1-5, we will have a New Parent/Student Orientation on Thursday, August 25th, from 1:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. in the school cafeteria. Students will have an opportunity to take a tour of the school and ask any questions they might have regarding HNES or the new school year. Afterwards, an Open House will take place and you can meet your teacher at this time. We hope you can join us!
For all returning students, an informal Open House will be held on Thursday, August 25th from 2:30 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. Stop by for a few minutes to meet your new teacher and classmates. As you know parking is at a premium at Henderson, so consider carpooling and/or walking for the open house.
The first day of school will be Monday, August 29th. Every day classes will start at 9:00 a.m. and end at 3:40 p.m. Our attendance policy is for students to come on time every day and stay all day. On the first day of school we will allow parents to accompany students to their classroom doors. However, we do value instructional time and feel it is very important to allow our students and teachers to get into a normal morning routine from the beginning. Please keep your “drop off” brief. We want everyone to feel comfortable as we begin this exciting school year. Parents are invited into the cafeteria afterwards for some light refreshments, tea, and coffee at our annual BooHoo/WooHoo Tea sponsored by our PTCO. It is a great chance for new parents to connect with others who have been at Henderson. The first morning of school is the only time that parents/guardians will not be required to present photo identification before entering the building. Identification must be provided by everyone entering the building based on our Prince William County policy. No exceptions.
We have scheduled Back to School Night for Monday, September 26th, for grades K-2 and Tuesday, September 28th for grades 3-5 from 6:30-7:30 p.m. The evenings will begin in the classroom and are designed for adults only. We would love every one of you to be there to hear about plans, activities, and policies for the upcoming school year. It is our goal to ensure that we continue to excel and meet the needs of all children. We believe in enhancing student achievement and creating a safe, secure, and positive learning environment for each and every one of us. Home and school together can make a difference!
Elementary student lunch prices for this year will be $2.45 (Adults $3.40). This will include a “hot” lunch, sun butter and jelly lunch, chef salad lunch or yogurt lunch. A La Carte items are also available such as packaged snacks, cookies, fresh fruit, and/or frozen novelty treats. You may specify that your child’s card may be used for meals only – excluding the purchase of a la carte items. Milk is 65¢, bottled water is 75¢, fruit juice is 80¢ and soy milk is $1.25. A complete breakfast can be purchased for $1.45. Remember that checks should always include the full name of your child as well as the teacher’s name. You may also set up an online payment account at www.myschoolbucks.com. Free and Reduced Price Meal Applications may be accessed online at www.pwcs.menus.schoolfusion.us/ or call 703.791.7314 for a form. If your student was on free or reduced lunch last school year, you must fill out a new application for this school year by September 30th. If your child is eligible for free or reduced lunch, they are also eligible for free or reduced breakfast. Breakfast will begin at 8:45. Menus can be accessed at pwcs.edu and found in the elementary school calendar, which will be sent home with your student.
The responsibility of providing breakfast and lunch money or home prepared meals to a student is that of the parent. However, Henderson Elementary shall make provisions to assist students who have forgotten or lost their breakfast or lunch money or home-prepared meal. The student and the parent/guardian will be reminded that an account is overdue with written notes home, emails, and/or phone calls. It is the parent/guardian responsibility to keep the student’s breakfast and lunch account up to date.
As a reminder, parents picking up and dropping off students with their vehicle should pick students up and drop them off in the front loop of the school. The parking lot is closed for pick up and drop off of students. The upper bus loop off of Dyers Lane is restricted exclusively for day care vans and buses. There will be no car drop-offs or pickups in this area. Staff will ask you to drive your student(s) around to the correct drop-off area if you are in the upper lot. Walkers should be picked up at the four corners where Waterway Drive meets with the school entrance. There will be crossing guards and teachers there to assist at the end of each day. This year there is an additional option for parents wishing to pick up their walker students. Information and applications for car riders and walker pick-up are available on our HNES web page and in the school office.
To ensure the safety of your child, any changes in dismissal need to be sent in writing by 3 p.m. Without a note, students will be sent home via their usual dismissal routine. To keep the front office organized as we prepare for a safe dismissal at the end of the school day, we will not dismiss students from the office between 3:15 – 3:40 p.m. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated.
